Minimally Invasive Orthopedics, Inc.

Muscle-Sparing (Quad-Sparing) Total Knee Replacement

No major tendons or muscles are cut. Instead, the quadriceps tendon and muscle, which are cut during normal knee replacement, are separated and avoided. The surgeon performs the replacement through a small incision—3 to 5 inches*—on the side of the knee. This incision is less than half the size of a typical incision, yet the same dependable implants are used. Because the incision is smaller and no major tendons or muscles are cut, recovery is faster and less painful.

*Indications for this procedure are influenced by a patient's age, weight, bone size, and severity of arthritis.
