
Sharat K. Kusuma, MD, MBA, is a licensed orthopedic surgeon with expertise in non-surgical and surgical treatment of arthritic disorders of the hip and knee. Dr. Kusuma and his partner, Dr. Ray Wasielewski, specialize in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery, including the muscle-sparing 2-incision total hip replacement, the muscle-sparing Watson-Jones anterolateral total hip replacement, the muscle sparing hip denervation procedure, the quad-sparing total knee replacement, and the quad-sparing unicompartmental knee replacement. Additionally, Dr. Kusuma possesses extensive training and expertise in the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure.
For undergraduate education, Dr. Kusuma attended Vanderbilt University, where he was the recipient of the Harold Stirling Vanderbilt Scholarship. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS degree in Chemistry and Economics. He stayed at Vanderbilt and earned a Master of Business Administration degree at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, where he earned the prestigious Beta Gamma Sigma award that is presented to the top 5% of MBA graduates nationally. He also attended medical school at Vanderbilt University, followed by residency training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. During his residency, Dr. Kusuma earned many awards for his research accomplishments. Upon finishing his residency in 2007, Dr. Kusuma commenced fellowship training in total joint reconstruction at the world-renowned Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. There, Dr. Kusuma trained with several true world pioneers in minimally invasive hip and knee surgery.
After completing this fellowship, Dr. Kusuma traveled overseas to obtain additional surgical training on the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure at the prestigious Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, England and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, England. This time spent in the United Kingdom, training with several masters in the field of hip resurfacing, provided Dr. Kusuma with invaluable experience in hip resurfacing and complex revision hip surgery.
Dr. Kusuma’s accomplishments and surgical acumen are recognized by many. Owing to his unique background in total joint replacement surgery, business, and healthcare economics, he consults with several American and European orthopedic device companies and healthcare management firms on a variety of topics. An avid researcher, Dr. Kusuma has authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles and frequently presents his research at national and international orthopedic meetings. He currently serves as associate director of Minimally Invasive Orthopedics, Inc.
Dr. Kusuma has donated much of his time and surgical experience to the underdeveloped world, traveling with the organization Orthopaedics Overseas to countries such as South Africa and India to perform volunteer orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Kusuma is also a Washington Health Policy Fellow for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is extensively involved in health policy formulation and advocacy for this organization.
