Birmingham Hip Resurfacing is a procedure designed to treat patients with hip arthritis. Unlike a total hip replacement, the Birmingham Hip implant resurfaces the hip joint rather than “replacing” it. In a total hip replacement, the top end of the femur (thigh bone) is removed then replaced with a metal stem, inserted through the top of the femur, and a metal ball head, attached to the top of the stem. With Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, the damaged bone and cartilage at the very top surface of the thigh bone is shaved away and replaced with a highly polished metal cap surface. The procedure offers several benefits over total hip replacement and is a good option for many young and active patients with advanced hip disease.
